The heritage listed Artillery Barracks (that houses the Army Museum) has several buildings built around a parade ground (now the car park) with the majority of structures and services constructed at the beginning of the last century.

Details

Duratec was engaged to remediate two balconies at the site. The two balconies were of similar construction with metal columns supporting a reinforced concrete slab, with timber railing and roof supports.

The reinforced concrete slabs and supporting steel beams to both balconies had visible defects and in addition to the balcony slabs, other defects to buried stormwater drainage and sewer system pipes had potentially contributed to the structural masonry defects.

The scope of works included:

  • Temporary removal of existing services and facilities on the balcony slab to allow for the works. Installation of Demec studs to reinforced concrete and masonry elements.
  • Temporary protection and propping to structurally support balconies prior to removal of existing defective reinforced concrete balcony slabs and steel beams.
  • Installation of new reinforced concrete balcony slabs and new steel beams on existing columns.
  • Application of corrosion protective treatment to the newly installed steel beam metal elements.
  • Repair to buried stormwater drainage and sewer system pipes.
  • Miscellaneous repairs to steel handrail, rotten timber post and damaged staircases.

Highlights

  • Works were carried out under the Artillery Barracks Heritage Management Plan.
  • Flexibility of methodology during the works with some changes to the scope to reflect findings during the repairs

Capabilities
