Fresh ideas, different perspectives and increased productivity are just some of the benefits of having a diverse workforce. Employing women in construction is a no brainer, however, in Australia women are still outnumbered by men.
At present women make up only 12 per cent of the construction industry workforce and unfortunately figures are showing that this gap is getting worse.
As a leading engineering, construction and remediation business, it is our responsibility to break the barriers and build a more diversified workforce. Not only does diversity help create a more inclusive workplace culture but also better mental health for all.
In line with International Women’s Day we spoke to some of Duratec’s leading ladies and here are their top 3 tips for women wanting to succeed in the industry:
Tip 1
Build trust with your peers and work team, respect that each person within your team has their strengths and weaknesses. Treat people the same way you want to be treated and don’t expect special treatment.
Tip 2
Find a mentor, having someone who can share their career experiences and provide you with guidance, motivation and emotional support is invaluable. You will have more than one over your working life and they do not have to be women.
Tip 3
Be confident in yourself and your abilities and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself in a non-confrontational way.
