The Port of Townsville operates 8 berths and is the largest container and automotive port in Northern Australia.

Duratec was engaged by the Port of Townsville to change out fenders at Berth 1 and remove and replace fender components at Berth 11. Both scopes necessitated the full removal of 2 fenders at each berth. The scope included:
Berth 1
- Assembly of new fenders and chains.
- Loading onto barge.
- Connection of rigging to existing fenders.
- Oxy cutting of existing chains and removal of bolts from fender connections.
- Removal of existing fenders.
- Installation of new fenders and chains.
Berth 11
- Assembly of new fenders and chains.
- Connection of rigging to existing fenders.
- Oxy cutting of existing chains and removal of bolts from fender cone connections.
- Removal of existing fenders.
- Removal of fender cones from fender fronts and replacement with new cone sections.
- Installation of new fender cones and chains.
- Replacement of 6 panels on front fender faces.
Highlights
- The 4 fender change outs were carried out safely and without any incidents at the 2 busy berths with short access windows and constant shipping schedule changes.
- Duratec utilised a work method combining cranes and rope access. This provided the level of versatility required to accommodate schedule adjustments throughout the project and ensured that the job was completed without affecting shipping operations.
