Duratec was engaged by FMG to carry out a site-wide concrete testing program at their port operations in Port Hedland.

Details

The purpose of the program was to employ different testing techniques to determine the existing condition and estimate the remaining service life (RSL) of the site wide concrete assets.

Testing methods included half-cell potential mapping, chloride ion ingress, carbonation depth measurement and compressive strength testing.

GPR scanning techniques were also used to determine the location of services within the test areas of the concrete elements. Carried out in coordination with the on site electricians and relevant stake holders, this was a requirement for obtaining penetration permits.

A comprehensive report was provided to the client that highlighted the main areas of concern and suggest remedial options along with associated budget cost estimates.

Highlights

  • The testing was carried out on a live site with no interruption to operations.
  • Testing was carried out on a range of assets to get a representative sample of the site wide asset condition.
  • Difficult access conditions were overcome by utilising a barge mounted EWP to conduct testing on the concrete dolphins.
  • Samples were submitted to a NATA accredited laboratory for testing.
  • The client is now able to plan their budget based on remediation for the coming years.

Capabilities

  • Condition Assessment
  • Non Destructive Testing & Structural Health Monitoring
