The Western Australian Maritime Museum is symbolic of Fremantle’s past, present and future as a coastal city and port and houses several unique galleries that explore Western Australia’s relationship with the sea.

Constructed in 2002, the upper and lower roofs consist of a marine ply substrate coated with a polyurethane waterproofing membrane system and a UV resistant coating.
Prior site investigations identified critical defects in the roof membrane system and marine ply including lack of adhesion of top coatings, soft/spongy locations in marine ply, delaminated and cracked sealant, corroded screws causing membrane blistering and marine ply deterioration through previous water ingress.
Duratec was engaged to remediate all the aforementioned defects to the external roof membrane using our team of specialist applicators and rope access technicians.
The scope of works included a water wash to clean the roof area, replacement of plywood cladding where it has deteriorated, sanding of the existing membrane followed by a prime coat and two top coats of a specialist membrane system. The membrane system is UV stable and able to withstand the harsh conditions imposed by the building’s location to the sea and elements.

- Coastal conditions meant that salt was deposited on the roof daily requiring continuous cleaning.
- Overcoat times meant that strict timelines had to be adhered to between coats, which was challenging in conjunction with the inclement weather.
